About

This blog is updated by me, Vik Sharma. I write electronic music and produce digital media.

I've been making music for about 20 years. First it was a tascam 4-track, with ferric tapes, cheap samplers, an electric guitar and a Boss DD-1 pedal. Now, well, my set-up is entirely virtual. I use Propellorheads Reason, Logic and augment that with guitar, bass, vocals or whatever is required to produce the right kind of music for a project.

I draw upon a lot of influences, and am constantly on the look out for music that's challenging, inspirational and moving. I think it's important to know what's going on, what music people are listening to, and what kind of music people are making. Inevitably, this means that most of the music I consume is contemporary, but I also appreciate modern classical music, and am attempting to move ever closer to a true blend of classical composition and electronic music. To combine Arvo Part or Phillip Glass with Kraftwerk in a way that makes complete sense to the listener.

When you work with me, what I hope - more than anything else - is that you'll feel like you've found a partner in the creative process. Music is increasingly important in documentary and drama, but often its not used in the right way, or more accurately, I think directors withdraw from using music dynamically, or boldly because they fear the consequences. I'd like to contribute to a new culture that embraces music as the key to articulating characterisation, driving narrative, evoking mood and heightening emotion.

Previous clients include the BBC, Channel 4, Betty, Mentorn, Diverse, Princess, Rooftop Productions, Electric Sky and Discovery. I was featured as one of Screen International magazine's new British film-makers in 2006.

I also played in a band, Joi, signed to Astralwerks in the U.S., and Realworld records/Virgin Music across the rest of the world. Joi was the recipient of the BBC Asian Music Award in 2000.

If you'd like to listen to some of my music, check out my audioreel and keep coming back to the site for ad hoc music posts.

As well as writing music for television and film, I also work in the digital medium as a strategist and producer. If you want to find out more, take a look at my company portfolio.

I am the resident 'Web Guru' on Stephen Merchant's 6 Music show, contributing music found exclusively online.

I also play guitar in a band called The Rules. It's music that's quite difficult to characterise, but obvious comparisons are Ian Dury and the Blockheads or Chas & Dave. But not as good, obviously.
