The Big Ship
Brian Eno is always around, he's informs, enriches and moisturises the cultural landscape. I was listening to Another Green World recently, and what a landmark it is. It sounds extraordinary now, contemporaneous in its sound with Mogwai and Boards of Canada, but transcending both in its emotional range and romanticism. God knows what people thought of it when it was first released. Revolutionary, no doubt. I hear he's now producing Coldplay, and edging them in the direction of My Bloody Valentine. In Q Magazine this month, he references Soon from the Loveless album as the last track he fell in love with, which also indicates that he's researching that dense, layered sound. I'm not a Coldplay fan, but I'd be interested to hear what the results musically are. Whatever wizardry Eno brings to the studio, whatever lateral strategies he employs, I'm pretty sure one of them won't be 'Shoot the lead singer and lyricist, because he's like the guy out of Simple Minds, but shitter'.
I wrote this as a homage to Eno. It's inspired by a track on Another Green World called The Big Ship.
